Review

Noon Turnip Cake is at No. 8 Heti Avenue in Hengshan, right beside the riverbank, in a small shop converted from a family warehouse that keeps its wooden doors and windows and a simple, old-fashioned feel. It specialises in what Hakka people call ban, all kinds of rice cakes. It joined the MICHELIN Bib Gourmand list in 2025 and remains on it in 2026, one of the few ban specialists in Hsinchu County to make the list.

MICHELIN notes that each batch takes at least six hours from soaking and grinding the rice to pressing, before being steamed, pan-fried or baked depending on the item. The signature is shui ban, or water cake, in sweet and savoury versions: the savoury one is topped with homemade preserved radish, dried tofu and soy sauce, while the sweet one is smooth with a natural rice aroma. Turnip cake and savoury rice cake are also popular; the latter blends japonica and glutinous rice with fried shallots, dried shrimp, mushrooms and shredded black pork. Supertaste notes the sweet cakes are seasoned with local honey sugar. Portions are small, suited to light bites or snacks.

Fans praise the careful ingredients and pure rice flavour, preserved radish that pairs well with the homemade chilli sauce, and set meals that let you try several cakes at once; the owners are friendly, the shop is clean with restrooms, parking out front is easy, and leashed pets are welcome. Critics find some items bland, note that radish and taro aromas fade out of season, and say portions are small and not very filling.

There is no public fixed price list online, so check on site. According to MICHELIN, it opens only Friday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Monday to Thursday, and it is cash only. Popular items sell out easily, so MICHELIN suggests calling ahead. The shop has also hosted hands-on classes such as mugwort rice cakes, so ask if interested.

Good as a snack stop on trips around Hengshan and Neiwan, or for anyone curious about Hakka rice-cake culture. First-timers should order a set meal to try the sweet and savoury water cakes and the turnip cake, then take a few savoury or sweet cakes home as gifts.
