VerdictBib Gourmand late-night braised pork; the bento with spicy radish is best value

A West District braised-pork-rice spot open only from evening until 2 a.m., using same-day pork braised until tender and springy. The bento with three sides is the best value; expect to sign in and queue even late at night.

Review

Night School Braised Pork Rice is at No. 109 Jingcheng Road in the West District, near Gongyi Road and Gongyi Park. The name says it all: it opens from 5 pm until 2 am, and the media call it a late-night canteen for night owls and shift workers. It was listed in the Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2023 and 2024 and remains on the 2026 list, making it one of Taichung's signature late-night spots.

Michelin notes that the signature braised pork belly uses pork slaughtered that day, stewed with soy sauce, sugar, rice wine and shallots until it is rich in collagen and springy. Business Today describes half-fat, half-lean belly braised to an amber colour, rich but not cloying. The best value is the bento: braised pork belly bento about NT$100 and minced pork bento about NT$80, each with three side dishes, among which the tender yet crunchy bamboo shoots are often recommended. The menu also has braised pork chop rice and pork knuckle rice; the chop is thick with a sweet-savoury seasoning and the knuckle is noticeably gelatinous. Soups include pork blood soup with ribs, large intestine or small intestine.

Praise centres on the tender, well-seasoned pork, the variety of sides and the low prices, and the clean, good-value intestine and pork blood soup is often mentioned. Many say the free pickled mustard greens and house-made spicy dried radish at the entrance are key to cutting the richness. Some bloggers, however, find the minced pork rice too fatty and the miso soup ordinary, and the ordering process has several steps that require patience.

When it is busy you register first, wait for your number, tick an order sheet, pay and then wait for the food to be brought over. Seating is mostly small tables for two to four, there is a paid car park behind, and the Michelin page says cash only. It is often full even late at night, so larger groups should expect to wait.

It suits anyone heading home late who wants a cheap, filling supper. On a first visit, order the braised pork belly bento with a bowl of intestine and pork blood soup, and grab some pickled greens and spicy radish at the entrance to eat with the rice.
