Review

A Kun Mian is at No. 142 Pingdeng Street in the Central District, behind Guangfu Elementary School and close to the Second Market, Taichung Park and the Yizhong shopping area; its yellow sign is easy to spot. This third-generation brunch noodle shop has been running for more than sixty years according to Michelin and over fifty according to Supertaste, so sources differ. It has been named a Bib Gourmand several times and is still on the 2026 list.

The signature is old-style dry noodles, about NT$40 for a small bowl plus NT$10 for a braised egg. Yellow noodles are topped with minced pork sauce fragrant with fried shallots and bean sprouts, then finished with house sweet chilli sauce or Taichung's Dongquan chilli sauce; the noodles are springy and cling to the meat sauce. Crystal dumplings cost about NT$35 for four and come dry with meat sauce or in soup, with a chewy skin and a dense, peppery filling. The mixed soup, about NT$45, holds one each of plain tofu, fried tofu, crystal dumpling and Fuzhou meatball plus a piece of pork blood cake, with substitutes when an item sells out; the broth has a savoury pickled mustard tuber note and does not leave you thirsty.

Several articles call it classic old Taichung flavour, generous and filling, with a small bowl being enough and great value. Some writers, however, find it slightly salty, and the shop is small, so at peak times you wait for a seat and it may already be full even at weekday noon.

There is hardly any décor; besides the indoor seats there are a few tables under the arcade. You order at the entrance and find your own seat, it is cash only, and Michelin also notes it is worth queuing for. It opens roughly from 6:30 am to 1:30 pm and is closed Wednesday to Friday, opening only at weekends and on Monday and Tuesday, so be sure to check before going.

It suits early risers who want a classic old Taichung brunch. Order a small dry noodle with a braised egg, plus a mixed soup or crystal dumpling soup, to try the shop's most popular combination in one go.
